1. How does the Sanden CO2 Hot Water Heat Pump (HWHP) work?
A heat pump is a device that uses a small amount of energy to move heat from one location to another. The Sanden CO2 Heat Pump system operates like a refrigerator in reverse. It contains a fan to push air through an evaporator that contains a refrigerant. The heat in the air passes through the evaporator and is absorbed by a natural refrigerant CO2 (R744). The now warm gaseous refrigerant is circulated in the system via a compressor. As it passes through the compressor, its pressure rises, as does its temperature. This hot refrigerant then passes through a heat exchanger to heat the water, which is finally pumped to the storage tank. The now cold refrigerant is then reused, as the cycle recommences.

2. What are the benefits of the Sanden HWHP?
The Sanden CO2 Hot Water Heat Pump System is supplied in two separate modules; Heat Pump Unit and Stainless Steel Storage Tank. This allows easy on-site handling and installation, as well as flexibility of the storage tank location, up to 4 metres distance from the Heat Pump Unit.

3. I don’t understand the use of a CO2 refrigerant by the Sanden HWHP? Isn’t CO2 a greenhouse gas and therefore harmful to the environment?
Yes, but CO2 has a Global Warming Potential (GWP – see below for explanation) of 1. Carbon dioxide is the baseline measurement of how it will contribute to global warming for a given mass.

Our system utilizes less than 1 kg of CO2 (R-744) as a refrigerant contained in a closed system at the factory.  The installer does not need to charge the heat pump on site.

Global warming potential (GWP) is a measure of how much a given mass of greenhouse gas is estimated to contribute to global warming. It is a relative scale which compares the gas in question to that of the same mass of carbon dioxide (whose GWP is by convention equal to 1). A GWP is calculated over a specific time interval and this time interval must be stated whenever a GWP is quoted or else the value is meaningless.

4. Why does Sanden HWHP use CO2 as a refrigerant?
R744 offers many unique advantages versus all other refrigerants, as follows:-

(i) far less environmental impact (ie. No ozone layer depletion and minimal global warming) than other commonly used refrigerants, should the system leak. (ii) offers much higher efficiency, thereby allowing more heat to be transferred to the water, for less energy used (ie. Excellent  thermodynamic ability).

5. What is the noise level of the Sanden HWHP?
The unit is rated at 38dB, which is almost silent. By comparison, a whisper is around 30dB and inside a library is approximately 40dB.

7. What is the life expectancy of the Sanden HWHP?
The Sanden HWHP has a design life of 15 years. The high quality, weather resistant construction of the Heat Pump outdoor module, carries a warranty of 3 years, whereas the high quality, extra long life stainless steel storage tank carries a class leading 15 year warranty.

8. At what temperatures will the Sanden HWHP operate effectively?
The Sanden HWHP will operate effectively between minus 10 and plus 43 degrees C. It is fitted with in built freeze protection, making it suitable for all climates.

9. Can I operate the Sanden HWHP on Off-Peak Tariffs?
Yes, please refer to p16 of the Owner’s Manual for details. There are no special settings for off peak connection. Simply ensure that the off peak tariff supplies a minimum of 5 hours continuous power to the Sanden HWHP.

10. What are RECs and STCs and what are they worth?
The purchase and installation of a Sanden HWHP entitles you to Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) – formerly known as Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs). For more information:

11. Is water quality an important consideration for the Sanden HWHP?11. Is water quality an important consideration for the Sanden HWHP?
Yes. Please refer to p11 of the Owner’s Manual for details. Importantly, no warranty applies to the heat pump unit and the storage tank, where the chloride level exceeds 200 mg/litre and the pH is less than 6.0. If in doubt, it is recommended that water chemistry information be sought from your local council or water supplier.

12. What do I do if the Sanden HWHP has a problem?
Firstly, review the Trouble Shooting Guide on p8 of the Installation Manual. If still unresolved, please contact the Dealer/Plumber you purchased your unit from.

13. If there is a power failure, will I need to do anything to the HWHP?
No, the HWHP is fully automatic.

14. If I go away from the house, can I turn the HWHP off?
Yes you can. Turning off will not affect the unit. Just switch the power back on when you get back.
